1. Why Do Hands Age Faster Than the Face?
The skin on your hands is thinner, has very few oil glands, and is almost constantly exposed to sunlight, detergents, and hot water. As a result, collagen breaks down quickly, fine wrinkles appear, and dark spots (age spots) begin to form after age 40.
2. Wear Gloves When Washing Dishes
Detergents and hot water strip the natural oils from your hand skin. Always wear rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning the house, or gardening. After removing the gloves, immediately apply moisturizer.
3. Apply Sunscreen Specifically for Your Hands Every Time You Go Out
Most people only put sunscreen on their face, yet hands receive UV exposure every time you drive or walk outdoors. Apply SPF 30 sunscreen to the backs of your hands, and reapply every 2–3 hours if you’re active outside.
4. Exfoliate with a Sugar and Olive Oil Mixture
Mix 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Massage into your hands using circular motions for 2 minutes, then rinse. Do this twice a week to remove dead skin cells and even out skin tone.
5. Use a Hand Cream with Retinol or Vitamin C
Retinol stimulates collagen production to reduce wrinkles, while vitamin C brightens dark spots. Apply a cream containing one of these ingredients every night before bed. Don’t forget to use sunscreen the next day because retinol makes skin more sensitive to sunlight.
6. Overnight Hand Mask with Petroleum Jelly
Before bed, apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly or shea butter to your hands, then put on clean cotton gloves. When you wake up, your hands will feel much softer and smoother. Do this 1–2 times a week for maximum results.
7. Eat More Vitamin C and E Rich Foods
Vitamin C (oranges, strawberries, bell peppers) is essential for collagen production. Vitamin E (almonds, sunflower seeds, avocado) protects skin cells from free radical damage. Consume both daily to help repair hand skin from the inside out.
